When St. Louis swept a doubleheader from Pittsburgh on August 31, 1926, enabling them to move into first place, ahead of the Pirates, it marked the first time in franchise history that the Cardinals were atop the league in the month of September.
The Cardinals would eventually gain their first World Series championship that season.
