When St. Louis visited Cincinnati on May 13, 1940, to replay a game originally scheduled for April 23, and postponed due to flooding, somebody neglected to inform the National League office. There were no umpires assigned to Crosley Field that day. Reds coach Jimmy Wilson and Cardinals pitcher Lon Warneke acted as substitute arbitrators until an “official” National League umpire could be contacted.
