Fan Stop Central lays it on the line this season in predicting the Super Bowl XLI matchup:
Representing the American Football Conference (AFC) - the NFL’s single-season touchdown passing king, Payton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts.
And, representing the National Football Conference (NFC) - the NFL’s single-season touchdown passing king’s brother, Eli Manning and the New York Giants.Indianapolis will finally breakthrough and play in the game of games. The New York Giants will make their fourth Super Bowl trip in team history … but this year, victory will go to the Colts of Indianapolis.
Though FSC blew the NFC representative, the champion was um, “right, uh, bang on” to quote Alan Thicke. But that’s not the real recap that we’re going to discuss here. The real disappointment in this game was none other than the artist formerly known as now known as again … Prince.
FSC was so ready for some of Prince’s eccentric, artistic flashes of entertainment, and what did the world get? Cover songs? Hendrix? Foo Fighters? Come on, Prince, what happened to the magic? Did your Aunt Jemima headpiece cut off the circulation to your brain?
OK, so Purple Rain was somewhat fitting (you know, south Florida, rain …), but what about When Doves Fly, Little Red Corvette, Raspberry Beret, U Got The Look? You had the perfect opportunity to show the world that Prince still has what it takes to rock a crowd, and instead you pretty much made up our minds that you should keep doing whatever you have been for the past (insert length of time here) years … maybe decades.
The stage was cool. Using Florida A & M’s marching band was a cool addition. At the FSC watch party, we were all cheering for the dancers to slip and bite it on the wet stage.
And don’t even get started on the disappointment of the commercials. That was too pathetic to even bring up.
Here’s to next year, and hoping someone puts an end to the streak of aging rockers at halftime (Paul McCartney, Rolling Stones, Prince, Phill Collins, Areosmith, Patti LaBelle, Tony Bennett, Arturo Sandoval, Miami Sound Machine). If they are going to stick with a single act for halftime (which FSC doesn’t think they should) then stick with the U2’s of the industry … enough with the geriatrics. Jimmie Johnson fractured his left wrist after falling from a golf cart in a celebrity charity tournament in Florida.
The driver of the cart made a sharp turn and caught Johnson off guard. He will not be able to drive for about four weeks and will miss the December 16th Race of Champions Nations Cup in Paris. Johnson plans on attending anyway as a consultant for Team USA. According to Hendrick Motorsports, he will be ready for testing for the Daytona 500 season opener.
It’s a sad day here in Kansas City. Kansas City’s favorite son and visionary, Lamar Hunt, died at the age of 74 after a long battle and complications with prostate cancer.
“He lived his whole life to make a difference, not just to make a living. We can learn something from that. He’s very humble, maybe the most humble I’ve ever been around. In today’s world, that’s something that you marvel at. You talk about a man who’s profession has been football and he has been a great sportsman. Bigger than that, he’s always made decisions for this football organization where the league came first. If it was good for the league Lamar Hunt was always first in line.”

Lamar Hunt’s legacy not only stays with Kansas City, but with sports and entertainment itself. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to purchase an NFL franchise, Hunt convinced a handful of other entreprenuers to form the American Football League. Hunt was the owner of the Dallas Texans. After low attendance in the AFL championship game (which Hunt’s Texans played), he soon realized that he would not succeed with his cross-town compatriots (Dallas Cowboys), and soon moved the Texans to Kansas City to become the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 8-team AFL lived for just 10 years before strong competition (and free market forces) forced the NFL to merge with the young league. Through the merger committee meetings it was Hunt who coined the term Super Bowl. With talks revolving around football, and football already used to the concept of bowl games, Hunt suggested that the championship game between the two powers in professional football would be called the Super Bowl. That and his kids’ “super ball” that, as he tells, was more of a subconcious outburst … and the “Super Bowl” has stuck ever since. His name also resides on the AFC Championship trophy - the Lamar Hunt Trophy.

Lamar Hunt was not only instrumental in professional football, but he was also an original part-owner of the Chicago Bulls; he was also the driving visionary for the formation of Major League Soccer (a league whose championship trophy also holds his name), as well as an owner of 3 MLS teams (Kansas City, Dallas and Columbus); he was also the founder of World Championship Tennis, and what many (even in Kansas City) didn’t know is that he was the visionary and owner of Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun.
