Gain distance the correct way

Posted by Fan Stop Central On June - 3 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

When many players try to hit their drives farther (like me), they tend to grip the club tightly and swing with excessive body movement that moves back and forth to and from the target. The smart way to gain distance is simply to increase club head speed naturally.

Grip the club very lightly and make a full turn. Feel your weight shift on your front side and then release the driver through impact and follow through in balance. The light grip pressure will speed up the club head through gravity and the force of your turn. This is a more efficient way of generating power than trying to muscle the ball.

Get the ball close from greenside bunkers

Posted by Fan Stop Central On June - 2 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

When you find yourself in a greenside bunker, you must remember a few things to get the ball up and down. Make a full turn with your shoulders and avoid the common fault of swinging only with your arms. Make a full swing that accelerates the club under the ball and follow through. Take sand with you. You may very well need to choke down quite a bit.

Imagine the ball going into the cup. This kind of focus will help you gauge and swing the club properly. You will be surprised how much the thought of holing out will help you make better bunker shots.

Golf Tip :: Hit and Hold

Posted by Fan Stop Central On March - 25 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

For accurate putts, you must send the ball down your line. A good way to ensure doing this is to hit and hold.

At setup, try to see the line to your target as if it were marked on the green. Strike your putt and then let the putter chase the ball down the line.  Hold the putter so it is facing the ball as it rolls toward your target.

If you watch the PGA or LPGA Tour professionals you will see this type of putting move with the vast majority of players.

This Day in Sports History

February 2, 1997:

Mark O’Meara shoots his fourth consecutive round of 67, holding off a charging Tiger Woods and third-round leader David Duval to win his fifth Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. With Woods posting a sizzling 8-under-par 64 in the final round, O’Meara sinks a chip-in for birdie from 20 feet on the 16th hole. Close friends and occasional practice partners, O’Meara and Woods relish their mano-a-mano duel in one of the PGA TourR 17;s showcase events.
