LOST: The Constant

I’m writing this as I watch – looks to be Desmond-centric.
Starts off with Desmond, Sayid and Frank in the helicopter following a precise “cheat sheet” that Dan made. Desmond seems to have a vision of himself in the military having a dream of being in a helicopter. Maybe this military life is paralleling what happened to him during the hatch implosion. This doesn’t seem to be a regular flashback where Desmond is just remembering something that happened in the past.
Something seems to happen to Desmond in the helicopter and he freaks out. He begins trying to unbuckle his belts, turns and asks Sayid, “who are you?”

Back on the island Jack is worrying about where the helicopter was and why it was taking so long. Dan decides to tell them that what happens on the island isn’t exactly the same time frame as elsewhere.
The helicopter lands on the boat and Desmond freaks on everyone. He tells them that he’s not friends with anyone. They take him to the “sick bay” to have a doctor look at him. They shut the door and he yells, “I’m not supposed to be here! This isn’t supposed to happen to me!” Then, a voice from the shadows, saying, “it’s happening to you, too, isn’t it?”

Back on the boat deck, Sayid is checking things out. Sayid gets a phone from Frank and calls Jack telling him what is going on. Dan asks if Desmond has recently been exposed to high levels of radiation or electromagnetism.
Desmond is now trying to talk to the guy in the sick bay. The guy seems to be in a daze, then pops out and tells Desmond he was just on a ferris wheel. The doctor then arrives and injects the guy (who is strapped down in a bed) with a syringe. Doctor then asks Desmond the last thing he remembers. Desmond flashes to the military, and is on the phone with Penny. He flashes back to the boat where Frank and Sayid bust in and puts Desmond on the phone with Farraday. Farraday asks him what year he thinks it is. Desmond says 1996, and he’s in the military. Dan tells him the next time he flashes that he needs to get on a train and go to Oxford, England to the Physics department where he needs to come to find him (Farraday).

Desmond and Dan are still on the phone. Dan tells Desmond some numbers to tell him when he finds him. Desmond gets to Oxford and does it. Dan takes a rat and shoots it with a radiation machine. The rat appears to go into a daze, then comes out and runs flawlessly through a maze. Dan is excited. Desmond isn’t. Dan explains that he built the maze just that morning and hadn’t planned to teach the rat to run it for another hour from then. Dan says that he’s just sent the rat’s conscious into the future. Dan begins to tell him how he can help and Desmond is flashed back to the boat.
The guy in sick bay turns out to be Meinkowski, someone who was mentioned when the Freighties first arrived in the chopper. Meinkowski then says, “Desmond? You’re Desmond? I was the communications officer on the boat. We were told to never answer incoming messages. I did. It was your girlfriend, Penelope.”

Desmond wakes back up in Farraday’s office in Oxford.
(This now begins to explain Desmond’s flashes of the future while he was on the island)
Farraday tells Desmond that he needs to have a constant so that he doesn’t go mad. Something that is dear to him both in the future and during 1996.
Desmond flashes back and forth a few times. Desmond flashes back to 1996 where he heads to find Penny, but her number is disconnected. Desmond finds her father and gets her address from him.
Back on the boat, Desmond is trying to contact Penny. Suddenly, Meinkowski’s nose starts to bleed. Shortly after, he has a seizure and passes out. We assume he is dead at this point. A few minutes later, Desmond’s nose begins to bleed.

Desmond wakes up, and he is back in a bathroom with sink water overflowing in 1996. He takes Penny’s address and goes to it. He finds Penny, and convinces her to listen to his story. He tells her that he won’t call her for 8 years – December 24, 2004 – she gets a weird look on her face, then gives it to him.
Flash back to the boat, and Desmond remembers the number, calls it and lets it ring until Penny picks up.
“Penny?”
“Desmond?”
“Penny, you answered. You answered.”
“Where are you?”
“I’ve been on an island. I’m on a boat. Do you believe me? You still care about me?”
“Of course. I knew and believed when I talked to Charlie.”
“I love you, I’m sorry. I don’t know where I am.”
“I’ll find you.”
“I love you.”
“I love you.”
Phone gets cut off. Desmond says, “thank you Sayid.” and seems to be back as he now remembers Sayid’s name on his own.
Dan is on the island looking through his journal and finds an entry that says, “if anything goes wrong, Desmond Hume will be my constant.”

Fan Stop Central Says:
Something to watch for and keep in mind … Sayid and Desmond noticed the calendar on the wall and saw that it was December 24, 2004. Keep in mind that December 26, 2004 was when the big tsunami hit Indonesia.
Be looking for something catastrophic to happen … or don’t be surprised when it does.
