FSC has filled out five brackets this season. And there seems to be a prevailing theme in them all … there are few perceived guarantees. Notable “upsets” include:

• #13 Davidson over #4 Maryland
• #11 Winthrop over #6 Notre Dame, then over #3 Oregon
• #4 Southern Illinois over #1 Kansas
• #12 Arkansas over #5 USC
• #11 George Washington over #6 Vanderbilt
• #10 Creighton over #7 Nevada, then over #2 Memphis
• even #5 Butler over #1 Florida in one bracket prediction

Of course, that’s not necessarily totally representative of all five brackets (FSC does have Memphis in the Final Four in one, and some others in another, and so on), but overall I think the “mid-majors” have gotten a screwy deal in this tournament with a great majority of them matched up with each other in the first round(s).

Even the play-in game was a little head-cocking: winners of conference tournaments are in this? Shouldn’t this be the two weakest at-large teams?
